Welcome

Kwekupotera Trust was formed in an effort to directly confront the after-effects of early childhood marriages within the Zimbabwean community.

We work tirelessly in our mission of reducing vulnerability of the survivors of child marriage aged between 13 and 18 years of age. Girls who marry young are often denied a range of human rights: many must discontinue their education, face serious health risks from early and multiple pregnancies, and suffer sexual and domestic violence.

Child marriage is a major impediment to regional development and prosperity. Countries lose out on potentially enormous social, economic, and political contributions these girls could make if given the right opportunities from the start.

Our Primary Focus

Women constitute 80% of the workforce in the predominantly agro-based Zimbabwean economy, and derive their livelihood from it.

Kwekupotera Trust aims to combat social exclusion, promote social protection, focusing on the most vulnerable survivors of child marriage.

As a Trust, committed to achieving the 2030 Agenda and its goals of eradicating poverty and building inclusive societies.

Child marriage is a human rights violation taking place on a vast scale in West and Central Africa which disproportionately affect girls. Girls who marry young often drop out of school and face physical risks, especially during pregnancy.

Due to the social, health and economic impacts of child marriage, the practice is a major obstacle to sustainable development.

What Others Say

“We have a crisis on our hands. The UN estimates that 15 million girls experience child marriage each year…. We must move from vulnerability to voice and leadership. Africa is young and full of innovation. This energy must be harnessed to ensure that we have lasting solutions. ”

Nyaradzayi Gumbonzvanda

“In sub-Saharan Africa, a staggering 40 percent of girls marry before age 18, and African countries account for 15 of the 20 countries with the highest rates of child marriage.”
